What I Love to Be

Fireflies are floating Christmas lights

In summer trees but in July

They blink as I look up and put this into words

The evening dust hangs in the air

Cicadas hum harmonicas so fair

My fingers pick in time the rhythm of their song

And oh that summer sweat

So sweet reminds me of what I love to be

And oh the twilight here

It brings me back to summers of past years

I feel the rocks beneath my feet

Of the path I have chosen to keep

And the soles of my shoes grow thinner every year
It’s funny how I sing in present tense

When I think mostly of the future, and the past times

And how I felt back then

And the puddles left by rain

They make me cautious of the steps I plan to take

But sometimes I don’t care

I walk barefoot in the mud

And oh that summer heat

Between my toes reminds me of what I love to be

And oh the stars so clear

They bring me back to summers of past years

Spray painted ivy leaves grow on a vine

And they remind me of the time

When we drank white wine and talked

While lyin’ in the grass
The sun started to set

I said, I think I’ll go

And you said no

And when I laughed and looked away, your fingers touched my neck

And oh that summer sweat

So sweet reminds me of what I love to be

And oh the twilight here

It brings me back to summers of past years

Fireflies are floating Christmas lights

In summer trees, but in July

They blink as I look up and put this into words

The Minor Chord Song

Do you remember that time that you touched my hand

While we were walking

Was that what you had planned?

Oh, understand…

That I would have thought that

You didn’t mean to touch

If you hadn’t looked up

Your eyes, they said so much…

Wouldn’t shut up

And now I’m folding up

A t-shirt you once loved

You loaned it to me after rain poured down on us

Once

Down by the river when you helped me climb that tree

To jump into the water

You held my hand and jumped with me

Sweet memory

And I didn’t know then just how much that I would crave

To hold your hand again

But you crashed into me like a wave…

Then rolled away

And now I lay here alone

Makin’ angels in the snow

Perfect wings of white

That tomorrow will melt

My dreams, that’s how they felt

Wish I could ask you if you ever think of me

But I don’t have courage

For once, it’s all flown free

Can you believe…

That I gave you my heart

And you gave me songs to sing

So I’ll play this guitar now

Your fingertips, they touched these strings

I’ll make them ring

And now I write this song

Wondering where I’ve gone wrong

Oh, let these minor chords

Sing me to sleep

Please

Be Still

Close your eyes with me & dream a dream

So real, we will forget we are asleep

The night sky is high

Stardust is settling

So breathe in deep

To the north country we will go

And I will wear a white dress in the snow

And strangers will stare and point at us in the cold

But care, we won’t

Oh be still, says the sculptor to the muse

Be still, says the earth to the moon

Be still, and please never forget

Me, be still, cause we’re not done here yet

We’ll climb to a mountaintop so tall

For the moment we’ll forget that we are small

We’ll reach out with our hands

And the stars we’ll touch them all

‘Cause we’re so tall

And then we will have an idea bright

We’ll strap on feathered wings and we’ll take flight

We’ll soar over the seas and we’ll reach Spain in just one night

‘Cause in dreams, we can fly

Oh be still, says the sculptor to the muse

Be still, says the earth to the moon

Be still, and please never forget

Me, be still, cause we’re not done here yet

If mystery is beauty, then you’ll ask

If I might know how much time has passed

The clocks are all cracked

And now time is all we lack

The sun is back

Oh be still, says the sculptor to the muse

Be still, says the earth to the moon

Be still, and please never forget

Me, be still, cause we’re not done here yet

Be still, cause we’re not done here….

Begin to Sing

Long-winded whims

Will I sink or swim?

I’m treading in water too deep to stand
There’s no turning back

The smoke’s too thick and too black

Restless flames upon the shores are closing in

So I’ll close my eyes and I’ll take a breath

And underwater, I’ll begin to sing

To sing for life, to sing for death

Oh underwater, I’ll begin to sing

Don’t you rescue me

From this cold steel dream

That’s weighing down my feet and my hands

I’ll search this murky green

For something new and obscene

Something to crawl underneath my skin

And my lips are tired of singing

And I’m tired of singing alone

So underwater I’ll begin to scream

Scream for the brave

And for the afraid

Oh underwater I’ll begin to scream

Whispers from the deep

Are seducing me

If I sink below too long, will I ever come back

Warm hands reach for me

From above, and I see

That a light is shining

Dissolving into the sea

So I’ll open my eyes

And I’ll take a breath

And underwater I’ll begin to see

See all the colors, and shades of gray

Oh underwater I’ll begin to see

A Thousand Eyes

There was sand, incense, their hands, their only defense

And lakes that washed up men upon the shores

Their holy ghosts were freed and then the children left the war

Alone on a ship, they cried no more
They had bread, and scars

And songs they played on guitars

As they drank the wine of roses sweet and pure

And they dreamt of their mothers’ arms more than ever before

As wild winds moaned and roared

And a thousand eyes watched the night skies

As their god pushed them to the north

They were warmly clothed, watched as water ebbed and flowed,

As they moved along with no control

And the moon, it shone, like diamond trapped in stone

Their hair, it grew, and it reached down to the floor

And that’s how they knew they were younger than they’d ever been before

And then arrived the summer storm

The wraths of the rains, they drove the ship insane

Applauded thunder, shamelessly so sure

And their green eyes only saw each other when the lightning sword

Pierced the blanket of the sky that kept them warm

And a thousand eyes watched the night skies

As their god pushed them to the north

They were warmly clothed, watched as water ebbed and flowed,

As they moved along with no control

When the storm had passed, the sea was set like glass

So smooth and so calm

The warmth of morning laid its sturdy hands

Upon the backs of babies big and small

Who promised they would heed the warning’s call

And they walked outside, and it was warmer than the inside

And they watched out their sunken shipwrecked eyes

On the ocean floors, at depths that they had never seen before

Before they braved that storm

And a thousand eyes watched the night skies

As their god pushed them to the north

They were warmly clothed, watched as water ebbed and flowed,

As they moved along with no control

The Weathermaker

Weathermaker, won’t you lie next to me?

I’ll sing you a song of the sweetest misery,

And if that song should put you to sleep,

Could you make the stars tonight shine down on me?

Then you’ll see,

I’m a stubborn lock

You could be my only key

And when the sun rises,

If I told you I’d love it so,

Oh Weathermaker, would you make it snow?

I wanna hold your hands in the cold

And in the morning when the reflections we see are gold

Young and old,

I’ll be the lullaby,

You be the baby I’ll console

And should you want to know

Whether warning winds will blow

Stories of lost and found,

Just you listen for the sound

Of the Weathermaker’s footsteps on the ground,

Of the Weathermaker’s footsteps on the ground

Weathermaker, up in the trees above

The littlest birds are singin’ songs about hate and love

So clap your hands, and tap your toes in time

Dance with me love, the sun will surely shine

Intertwined,

I am the melody, you are the chords and words that rhyme

I feel your breeze across my fingertips blow

And if you stay here with me, your body they will know

If I’m a girl who waits so long

For a Weathermaker with whom I’ll belong

Am I wrong?

Cause if you’re asking me, well you know, I’ll come along

And should you want to know

Whether warning winds will blow

Stories of lost and found,

Just you listen for the sound

Of the Weathermaker’s footsteps on the ground,

Of the Weathermaker’s footsteps on the ground

Of the Weathermaker’s footsteps on the ground

Words Left Unsaid

My hands are cold, and my lips are chapped and red

A deeper shade for every word left unsaid

And in the depths of my lungs, words lie waiting

I see my life in the creases of my hands

Valleys and hills, calloused yellow lands

And in the spaces between them, words are swimming

Oh, words you cannot speak, you’ll try to sing

And words you cannot hear, you can still dream

And words of lovers, with you you will bring

Everywhere

They say grey skies cast no shadows, well alright

I see no secrets in the grass on which I lie

But someone whispers to me, they’re just hiding

It was a voice I was sure that I once knew

Through my skin and out my throat it flew

Whispering those wise words, that won’t leave me now

Oh, words you cannot speak, you’ll try to sing

And words you cannot hear, you can still dream

And words you don’t understand will seem

To make sense soon

I’ll start running to escape the words inside,

My bare feet and cold wet grass collide

Over and over again, I am breathing now

Eventually I’ll walk home, now it’s dark,

Hidden conversations in passing cars

Darkness gives them daring that I’m lacking

But suddenly the night reveals to me

That voice I heard, but could not see

It’s saying, you’re the same as me

It’s saying…

Oh, words you cannot speak, you’ll try to sing

And words you cannot hear, you can still dream

And maybe you’ll never know what those words mean

But does it matter?

My hands are cold and my lips are chapped and red,

A deeper shade for every word left unsaid

And in the depths of my lungs, words lie waiting
